| Most
of the over 150 cabins in the Tongass National Forest are
accessible by float plane but many can be reached by boat
or trail.
The
Forest Service recreational cabins are located in some
of the most productive fishing and hunting areas of the
region. Hiking trails provide access to beaches,
streams, hunting areas, and countless opportunities to
view and photograph magnificent scenery. Fishing
opportunities at the cabins include Steel Head, Rainbow,
and Cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, Grayling, and Salmon.
Most
cabins are equipped with a wood heating stove (although
a few have oil stoves), plywood bunks, and a table.
Cabin users should bring their own bedding. Air matresses,
cooking and eating utensils, camp stoves and lanterns
are available on a rental basis from Alaska
Wilderness Outfitters. Most cabins sleep four
or more, but you should get specific information on any
cabin you are interested in prior to making reservations.
(Equipment rental price list)
Skiffs
are furnished by the Forest Service at most cabins located
on lakes. Oars are provided, but Alaska Wilderness
Outfitting can supply a small
outboard motor or an inflatable boat & motor to
add to the enjoyment of your stay.
